Petrarch Meets His Muse

On this date in 1327, Italian poet Petrarch first sees his idealized love, Laura, in the church of St. Clare in Avignon. Petrarch, who is often called the “father of humanism,” wrote a collection of 366 poems about his love called Il Canzoniere, which you can read in translation here:
