Whitman Born on This Date

American poet Walt Whitman born this day in 1819. A native of Long Island, New York, Whitman served as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War; he also worked as a journalist, teacher, and government clerk in addition to publishing poetry. His most famous work, Leaves of Grass, marks an important transition between transcendentalism and realism. Whitman, one of the most influential poets in the American canon, is often called the “father” of free verse. You can read his poetry here:
