UNT’s Favorite Son Born on This Date

Author and UNT graduate Larry McMurtry was born on this date in 1936. His Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Lonesome Dove follows ex-Texas Rangers Woodrow F. Call and Augustus McCrae as they drive cattle from Texas to Montana. He also wrote the novel Terms of Endearment, The Last Picture Show, and Horseman, Pass By; each of these novels was made into a highly successful film. In 2006, McMurtry and co-writer Diana Ossana received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Brokeback Mountain, which was originally a short story written by E. Annie Proulx.
