“Here Lies One Whose Name Was Writ in Water”

British poet John Keats died at age 25 on this date in 1821 in a small room near the Spanish Steps in Rome. Keats went to Rome hoping the warm air would ease his suffering, which was caused by tuberculosis. He is buried at the Protestant Cemetery in Rome; his epitaph reads, “Here lies One Whose Name was writ in Water.”
