French Huguenot Jean Calas, who had been wrongly convicted of killing his son on this date in 1762, died after being tortured by authorities. This event inspired Voltaire to begin a campaign for religious tolerance and legal reform, as evidenced in his Treatise on Tolerance. You can read the full text here:
