“Sleepe After Toyle, Port After Stormie Seas”

Joseph Conrad Gravestone

On this date in 1924, Joseph Conrad died suddenly of a heart attack. His epitaph was taken from Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene:

Sleep after toyle, port after stormie seas,

Ease after warre, death after life, does greatly please.
