When Johnny Came Walking Home

John Keats

On this date in 1818, John Keats returned home after a walking tour of Scotland. During the tour, he began to show signs of tuberculosis, the disease that claimed his life. When he began coughing up blood in early 1820, Keats said, “I cannot be deceived in that colour. That drop of blood is my death warrant. I must die.”
