Brontës Begin School at Cowan Bridge

Cowan Bridge

On this date in 1824, Maria (age 12), Elizabeth (age 10), and Charlotte (age 8) Brontë are sent to Cowan Bridge School by their widowed father, Patrick Brontë. Both Maria and Elizabeth will died within a year of entering the school. Charlotte Brontë based the Lowood School in Jane Eyre on her experiences at Cowan Bridge.
